What's Up in North Carolina

JANUARY, 2012

Hello everyone, welcome to the New Year! After our successful Raleigh Fundraiser at the end of 2011, we have exciting plans for 2012 and would love support as we aim to achieve our “resolutions.” This year, we resolve to:

• Add programming in Durham Public Schools
• Raise scholarship funds for some of our local students to attend the Summer Y.O.G.A. for Youth Leadership Camp in California July 8-15
• Offer partial scholarships for the Y.O.G.A. for Youth Teacher Training in Asheville, NC October 24-28.

JORDAN HIGH SCHOOL PILOT PROJECT

A high school in the Durham public school system, Jordan will be the site of a pilot project that will provide yoga classes to 15 male students for an 8-week series from February 6 – March 29. Students who are struggling academically and/or behaviorally will volunteer to take part in the 3 classes/week that will be offered after school running from early February to late March. Students who have received afterschool suspension can elect to do the yoga classes as an alternative to the suspension. We are very excited to be serving students in the public school system!

Y.O.G.A FOR YOUTH SUMMER CAMP

We are thrilled that Y.O.G.A. for Youth will offer its first children’s summer camp this year, and want North Carolina youth to be well-represented at the camp! We are creating a Scholarship Fund for deserving Y.O.G.A. for Youth students from our local programs to participate in the camp, which will be held in California July 8-15. If you would like to donate, please send your check made payable to “Y.O.G.A. for Youth” to Y.O.G.A. for Youth NC, PO Box 52428, Durham, NC 27717-2428. Make sure to write “Summer Camp” on the memo line.

Y.O.G.A FOR YOUTH TEACHER TRAINING IN NORTH CAROLINA

Mark your calendars and Save the Date! North Carolina will host a Y.O.G.A. for Youth 40-hour Teacher Training October 24-28. The location is still to be confirmed, but will most likely be in Asheville. Y.O.G.A. for Youth NC has set the goal of offering a limited number of partial scholarships for yoga teachers who commit to teaching for Y.O.G.A. for Youth upon completion of the Training. If you would like to help us train more NC teachers and expand our programming, please send your check made payable to “Y.O.G.A. for Youth” to Y.O.G.A. for Youth NC, PO Box 52428, Durham, NC 27717-2428. Make sure to write “Teacher Training ” on the memo line.

Y.O.G.A. for Youth NC Hero of the Month – Nina Marie Collins

Nina Marie Collins, a North Carolina native, is a certified yoga teacher and an online student in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. Nina came on board with Y.O.G.A. for Youth 8 months ago, and has been an active volunteer ever since! Nina was a crucial player in making our fall fundraiser at the Raleigh Yoga Center a success, helped us get set up in Mail Chimp, and is now maintaining our mailing list and contacts, and sending out our monthly newsletter update. This year, she will be working with fellow volunteer Molly McKinley on marketing, publicity, and corporate sponsorship. She plans to take the Y.O.G.A. for Youth Teacher Training in the fall so that she can join our cadre of teachers. We love you, Nina!
