Y.O.G.A. for Youth North Carolina

Y.O.G.A. for Youth seeds have been planted in North Carolina, and are taking root and flowering!

In 2007, the first North Carolina Y.O.G.A. for Youth teacher training took place at Duke University in Durham, hosted by the Duke University Dance Program. The first Y.O.G.A. for Youth NC class series were held at Carter Community School, a public charter school in Durham, as part of their summer school program.

In the fall of 2007, Y.O.G.A. for Youth partnered with the International Association of Black Yoga Teachers and the Durham Literacy Center to host a Community Health Extravaganza at the Lakewood Baptist Church in Durham. With health screenings, yoga and meditation classes, a drumming workshop, acupuncture workshop and delicious, healthy food, the event was a huge success and introduced Y.O.G.A. for Youth to the community.

In 2009, Y.O.G.A. for Youth teachers participated in a Health Fair at Rogers-Herr Middle School in Durham. In one morning, the five teachers and assistant teachers saw the entire school! Groups of 30-40 students filed into the media center for a 20-minute yoga session that introduced them to the basics and health benefits of pranayam and postures/exercises such as frog pose and warrior pose.

Y.O.G.A. for Youth NC has ambitious plans for 2010! Coming up is a FUNDRAISER YOGA RAVE that will take place the evening of May Day -- SATURDAY, MAY 1 at PATANJALI’S PLACE Yoga Studio in downtown Durham. Look for more details coming soon – this will be an exciting evening of yoga, guided meditation, live kirtan, food and more! Please contact Keval at kevalk@earthlink.net if you would like to volunteer for this event.

Funds raised at the May 1st event will be used for scholarships to send 2 local teachers to the Y.O.G.A. for Youth Teacher Certification course in Los Angeles May 19-23. Y.O.G.A. for Youth NC is committed to the development of young leaders/teachers, and priority for these scholarships will be student teachers.

The Yoga Rave proceeds will also help to fund Y.O.G.A. for Youth NC discounted class series in the summer and/or fall of 2010 in Durham.
