Welcome to Y.O.G.A. for Youth
Y.O.G.A. for Youth celebrates its 16th year of bringing yoga and meditation to urban youth and we are excited that you have chosen to visit our site. We truly hope that this is more than a visit, but a partnership where you will participate with us in empowering youth with the tools
for positive personal and community change.
Y.O.G.A. for Youth brings Yoga and Meditation to inner city kids in schools, juvenile facilities, detention centers and even jails. Our organization trains teachers to help create miracles in the lives of adolescents who desperately need tools to navigate their very difficult environments and situations. They learn to breath, stretch, relax and experience the stillness within. They observe their reactions to things they cannot change and learn to make better choices when facing difficult situations.
The times we are facing are very challenging for all of us and our youth are catching the brunt of it all. The cuts in social and educational services are creating an environment that is anything but nurturing. "When I used to get angry I would attack, but now with yoga I breathe and walk away" (a 16 year old at Sylmar Juvenile Hall) When a young person leaves a yoga class they feel like they have just been given a sense of meaning in their lives. They feel that there is a chance they can make it somehow in this world of uncertainty. Why? Because they have gotten a glimpse of something great inside of themselves, and they like the way it feels.
I cannot overstate how important this work is to these kids.
There are several ways you can become involved:
- volunteer your time by working closely with our efforts
- train to bring yoga to youth
- tell everyone in your personal and professional networks about us
- make a secure donation to help us continue our work
We appreciate your interest and look forward to your active participation.
