Welcome to Y.O.G.A. for Youth in Canada!
We are excited to announce the creation of Y.O.G.A. for Youth in Canada! A total of 27 inspired souls completed the training with Y.O.G.A. for Youth founder, Krishna Kaur, in May 2018. Our teachers have a range of experiences and backgrounds from school teachers, parents, psychiatrists, doctors, yoga teachers, and individuals who were once at-risk youth themselves and are ready to give back. We have teachers across British Columbia (BC), with the majority located in the lower mainland.
The Y.O.G.A. for Youth program helps students choose peaceful, positive, and non-violent approaches to navigate life. Our curriculum translates ancient scientific yogic tools into a language youth can understand and apply to daily life. Unique programs have been designed to combat self-defeating behaviors that are prevalent among todays youth such as stress, anger, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, poor concentration, bullying, violence, eating disorders, and substance abuse. This curriculum works by diminishing fear, the root cause of anger, and increasing a belief in the student’s own greatness. Regardless of their age, youth crave stability and clarity, they long for the sense of peace and balance that is their birthright. Our program is specifically designed to help them realize this potential!
Y.O.G.A. for Youth Canada was designed to foster and develop these core principles:
- BEHAVIORAL STABILITY
Discipline and respect, interest and motivation, patience, peer and social interaction, and improved state of mind.
- PHYSICAL HEALTH
Weight and exercise, nutrition and positive eating habits, substance awareness, body education, and assistance with chronic conditions.
- SELF ESTEEM
Stress and anxiety management, calmness and confidence, mood stability, self-worth and accomplishment, body image, and appearance.
- SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE
Focus and determination, enhanced study habits, comprehension and retention, class participation, creativity, and cognitive thinking.
Y.O.G.A. for Youth class participants have reported feeling a better sense of self-worth, the ability to control their temper, and more optimism to name a few. A reduction in peer bullying has been seen among participants, as well as a decrease in the likelihood of repeating destructive behaviours (in some cases leading to imprisonment). The Journal of Development & Behavioural Pediatrics (39-3, 2018) reported significant decreases in perceived stress levels, significant increases in positive affect, and significant increases in resilience of 9 to 14 year old participants after ten weeks of the Y.O.G.A. for Youth program in Southern California. Similar results have been reported by many other research studies where yoga helps youth manage emotions, develop positive goals and relationships, care for others, and make responsible decisions.

By beginning to feel the beauty of their own identities and their interconnectedness to the larger community, students learn to adopt new strategies for sublimating self-defeating tendencies, thus experiencing ways to make healthier life choices”.

Our goal is to teach regular yoga and meditation classes to youth and at-risk youth in more than 10 facilities (e.g., youth centres, psychiatric services, schools, yoga studios) across BC by the end of 2018. We are excited to work with you to set up monthly, weekly or daily classes that blend our goals with yours.
